Typography: Monotype acquires Fontsmith

FS Koopman of Fontsmith

Monotype adds 70 new font families to its collection.

The American foundry Monotype announces that it has bought the English foundry Fontsmith. This operation unveiled on January 27th allows Monotype to expand its IP library with 70 new font families, including some very popular fonts (FS Albert, FS Brabo, FS Koopman, FS Meridian, FS Millbank and FS Untitled).

Fontsmith's fonts will integrate with Monotype's online sales site (MyFonts.com) and Monotype's Mosaic font management solution, which already has 14,000 fonts.

"Fontsmith has been a pioneer in the typeface field and with this acquisition we are delighted to add a highly respected font library and welcome an innovative team of type designers to the Monotype family." says Monotype CEO Scott Landers.

Fontsmith has created fonts for many major international brands such as BBC, British Gas, Colgate or ING. The foundry has won several awards including the European Design Awards for FS Irwin in 2018 and FS Neruda in 2019, and the Print and Typography and Lettering Award for FS Siena in 2017.

Fontsmith was founded in 1997 by Jason Smith, who began his design career as an intern at Monotype. "It's a complete story. My first experience as a type designer at Monotype motivated me to follow my passion and led me to chart my own path in font design. Going back to where it all began is both nostalgic and exhilarating for me!"

The amount of the transaction is not disclosed.
