Manufacturers are on the line to meet the new legislation on packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables.

Like its competitor DS Smith, Smurfit Kappa is launching a range of packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables, called Safe&Green.

The Irish manufacturer of paper-based packaging and DS Smith expect to make a name for themselves in this market, which is expected to grow strongly in a few months. Indeed, from 1 er from 1 January 2021, plastic solutions for the sale of fresh fruit and vegetables, which have often been used until now, will be banned in all retail outlets for packaging weighing less than 1.5 kilograms (excluding particularly fragile fruit and vegetables such as raspberries).

Smurfit Kappa's Safe&Green range consists of corrugated or solid board. It is fully recyclable and made from a renewable and traceable resource.

Safe&Green is composed of trays of different sizes suitable for the vast majority of fruits and vegetables, which can be custom made. These trays can also be personalised with colour printing. They are water resistant and other barrier layers are available.

One of the illustrations of the use of these new trays is the packaging for the tomatoes created specifically for the Breton cooperative Savéol and launched on the shelves in February 2020 .

They also meet the expectations of consumers who consider environmental criteria to be essential to today's packaging, according to the survey by the Irish papermaker Le rapport des Français (read More than three-quarters of French people think they can do without plastic packaging ).
