A pirated printer, new ambitions for Atep, Bobst's financial objectives, a new product range at UPM... This week's news.

Pirated printer prints threats on up to 500 sheets of paper

On Wednesday, October 28, the day of the terrorist attack on the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice, employees at a stationery store near Toulouse were unpleasantly surprised to discover that one of their printers had printed threatening messages on hundreds of pages during the night, the newspaper reveals La Dépêche .
About 500 A4 sheets of paper were marked with terrorist inscriptions such as "The war has just begun, good for your face Samuel Paty" or "You don't care about our religion, we'll cut your head off, it's simple enough". And history repeated itself the next day with new threats, this time against the presidential couple.
Video surveillance of the store showing no human intervention during the printing of these messages suggests that the self-service printer in the store has been hacked. The judicial police in Toulouse have opened an investigation.

Under the impetus of its new president, Atep is undergoing a facelift

The Association of Publishing and Advertising Technicians (Atep) changes its logo. This new visual identity is part of a broader communication approach. Its new office chaired by Richard Pelissero since the beginning of the year wishes indeed to modernize its image. To do this, the association intends to be present on social networks, organize webinars on various current topics and open up to all professions in the graphic chain.

Earnings before interest and taxes in the green for Bobst

The Swiss packaging machine manufacturer presented a review of the past year's activities and its prospects for 2020. In the first half of 2020, the Covid-19 outbreak had a negative impact on the "significant impact on sales." of the group, then business improved in the third quarter. The Group expects annual sales of approximately CHF 1.3 billion or EUR 1.2 billion (compared to CHF 1.6 billion or EUR 1.5 billion in 2019).
Group earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) are expected to be positive, even before the favourable one-off impact on operating profit (EBIT) of around CHF 20 million relating to the sale of properties in North America concluded in 2020. And in the long term, Bobst maintains its ambitions: an operating profit (EBIT) of at least 8 % and a return on capital employed (ROCE) of at least 20 %.

A new milestone for the UPM Group

UPM has started construction of its new mill in Leuna, Germany. This is a major milestone for the EUR 10.2 billion paper group: with an investment of EUR 550 million and more than ten years of research and development, UPM will produce a new range of 100% wood-based biochemicals at the biorefinery that will replace fossil-based products in plastics, textiles, cosmetics and industrial applications. The biorefinery is expected to be operational by the end of 2022.
"The Leuna biorefinery will be the nucleus of a completely new and valuable growth business and will open up completely new markets for UPM with great growth potential for the future", says Jyrki Ovaska, Executive Vice President of Technology at UPM. "Awareness of climate change has increased customer demand for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels."
The plant will process solid wood into bio-monoethylene glycol (BioMEG) as a raw material for polyesters and antifreeze formulations and bio-monopropylene glycol (BioMPG) to replace BMP used in e.g. bottles, packaging, textiles and de-icing fluids.
