Coca-Cola launches new carton solution for can collation

Coca-Cola European Partners begins manufacturing and distributing the carton packaging solution created by WestRock.

While Coca-Cola had announced the use of the KeelClip solution to replace in many European countries the plastics that bundle cans, the CanCollar solution will be used in Spain.

Like the KeelClip, the CanCollar solution is made of cardboard and can replace shrink film and Hi-cone rings, but does not require any glue stitches. Created by the American company WestRock, this new packaging solution is currently being manufactured at the Barcelona plant. The Spanish plant has benefited from an investment of 2.6 million euros this year.

First launched in Europe, this CanCollar cardboard ring will first be distributed in the Balearic Islands starting this month and will save more than 18 tons of plastic per year.

"The agreement with WestRock illustrates our commitment to reducing plastic in our secondary packaging, says Joe Franses, Vice President of Sustainability at Coca-Cola European Partners. By the end of 2020, we will have removed more than 4,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastics from our secondary packaging in Western Europe. It is by collaborating on innovative packaging solutions like CanCollar that we are able to do this."
