Smurfit Kappa accelerates the development of its patented TopClip solution

Smurfit Kappa now offers an end-to-end solution for beverage companies.

In order to position itself in the new market for can packagings, Irish packaging producer Smurfit Kappa has teamed up with the German manufacturer of filling and packaging systems for the liquid food and beverage industry, KHS, to launch TopClip.

Introduced last year, TopClip is a solution for grouping aluminium cans. Entirely made of cardboard, it replaces shrink film solutions or hi-cone type plastic rings. "This patented product meets the needs of consumers who expect retailers and brands to offer more environmentally friendly packaging." says Smurfit Kappa.

TopClip completely covers the tops of the pack cans, protecting them from dirt and providing branding opportunities. And the recyclable product has a 30% lower carbon footprint than shrink-wrap packaging.

The partnership with KHS makes it possible to bring an end-to-end solution for beverage companies to the market, "namely a unique and innovative packaging solution combined with efficient, high-speed packaging machines." indicate both partners.

Cola-Cola has announced that it will be using the KeelClip solution designed by the American group Graphic Packaging International in Europe by 2022 (read No more plastic for Coca-Cola can packaging in Europe ) as well as CanCollar of the American WestRock for the Spanish market .
