Heinz packs his cans in cardboard boxes

This new solution avoids the use of 500 tons of plastic per year and reduces the brand's CO2 footprint by 18.7%.

A new player in the food industry is removing plastic from its packaging. The American manufacturer of sauces and ready meals Heinz is replacing the film of its multi-packs of canned food with a flat cardboard solution on the English market.

By substituting plastic with this recyclable solution, called Heinz Eco-Friendly Sleeve Multipack, Kraft Heinz will reduce its consumption of plastic - a material that is not widely recycled - by more than 500 tonnes per year. Packaging made of PEFC-certified cardboard requires half the material of a fully closed packaging box. In addition, the manufacture and transport of the new sleeve is also carbon neutral. The brand will thus reduce its CO2 footprint by 18.7%.

This new solution required an investment of £25 million (?29 million) over three years in its English plant in Kitt Green.

The new packaging will be used for all Heinz canned products in the UK from autumn 2021. No information on other markets was provided.
