Atelier Nun, between letterpress printing and new technologies

L'Atelier Nun. Creation on Lana light paper, printing and hot stamping.

Based in Strasbourg, Nun is both a graphic design studio and an artisanal printing workshop.

Along with the digitization of the graphic industries, there has been a strong craze for artisanal printing practices for several years. The advantage of N?n is that it blends these two trends.

Graduates of the e-artsup school of visual creation, Marielle de Vaulx and Vincent Lamarche created the design and graphic arts studio N?n in 2013. Based in Strasbourg, N?n is both a studio and a workshop, explains Marielle de Vaulx.

"We have a digital part, which Vincent is responsible for. It's all about digital deployment: graphic design, logos, applications, websites... And there's the workshop part, which is more oriented towards art printing, i.e. the implementation of creative solutions around creative paper with letterpress printing equipment.»

The complementary nature of the two practices allows the company to be more robust. In the early months of the health crisis, when the printing shop was slowing down, the digital practice helped to offset the financial losses.

The workshop includes proofing presses, including a Victoria Wercke from the late 19th century e and a Heidelberg press with a hot stamping module. Equipment that allows the printing company to work on small series, from design to realization.

The printer answers to a rather varied clientele whose one of the characteristics is to have a strong attraction on the preservation of the heritage and the quality of the printed supports. They can be small or large companies, or communities, etc. N?n is composed of two people, but collaborates over the course of the projects with external collaborators: illustrators, developers, etc.

PLATT - Valerie Hendrich. "The first project produced since our installation. It is a micro edition, the result of an artistic education work carried out with the students of the regional languages and cultures sections of the Jean de Pange high school in Sarreguemines in connection with their ancestors. The project is led by the visual artist Valerie Hendrich and printed by us.»

Since February, the workshop has moved to the third place Les Ateliers Eclairés in Strasbourg.

"We are with other companies, associations, creative people, craftsmen... It is a very dense place with creation and craftsmanship as a common thread. In this environment, the workshop can take over. This is what is important in our project, our two activities support each other and allow us to move forward, concludes Marielle de Vaulx
