Metsä Board Kyro reduces fossil fuel consumption

Metsä Board Kyro

The Finnish paper group Metsä has made "significant investments" to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

Metsä Board Kyro cardboard mill in Kyröskoski, Finland, is gradually phasing out the use of peat.
The power plant, from which the mill that produces coated folding boxboard buys energy, has replaced the peat it used to burn with renewable energy.
The power plant will use wood-based fuels from the production and supply by-products of Metsä Group's forest industry subsidiaries.

in the long term, Metsä Board Kyro's share of fossil fuels will decrease from just over 25% to about 10% of the overall fuel demand.

The gradual elimination of the peat required "significant investments" Metsä Group said in a statement that it has invested in the power plant's technology to control boiler corrosion damage and optimize its operation.

Metsä Board, Metsä Group's pulp and paper division, plans to achieve fossil-free production by the end of 2030.

In 2020, Metsä Board, which is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki, generated EUR 1.9 billion in revenue and Metsä Group EUR 5.1 billion.
