Stora Enso invests EUR 8 million in molded fiber products

Stora Enso is significantly strengthening its position in the fast-growing formed fiber market.

Finnish-Swedish paper group Stora Enso will double its molded fiber production capacity. With an investment of ?8 million, new machinery will be installed at the Hylte site in Sweden, increasing production capacity from 50 to about 115 million product units. Stora enso, which has entered this market in 2020 will become one of the leading European suppliers of molded fiber.

Recyclable and renewable, these fibers made from pressed and molded wood pulp can replace plastics in a wide range of applications. Stora Enso's PureFiber range has a CO2 footprint up to 75% lower than alternative packaging materials such as plastic or bagasse. These products are currently used in food packaging such as bowls, trays and lids and the technology is also the basis for paper bottles that should be produced industrially this year.

"There is strong market demand for environmentally friendly circular packaging solutions that replace plastic and other fossil-based materials," says Sohrab Kazemahvazi, senior vice president, head of formed fiber at Stora Enso. "With our investment and capacity expansion, we are further improving our position in this growing market."
