New production line for the former UPM Shotton mill

Valmet's new paperboard machine will make the mill "the largest and most technologically advanced paper mill in the UK" according to Eren Paper, its owner.

A major delivery is expected at the English paper mill Shotton of the Eren Paper Group. Finnish pulp and paper machine manufacturer Valmet will deliver a new shipping carton production line to this mill with 185 employees. The machine will produce high quality testliner and fluting, using 100% recycled paper. The line (PM3) is scheduled to start up in the second quarter of 2024.

"The new Shotton packaging board machine will make our paper mill the largest and most technologically advanced paper mill in the UK. We have chosen a board line with high performance, high speed and higher production rates." said Hamdullah Eren, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eren Paper.

The board machine with a width of 10 110 mm will produce testliner and fluting qualities in grammages ranging from 70 to 135 g/m 2 . The machine has a nominal speed of 1,700 m/min and an annual capacity of approximately 650,000 tons.

The Shotton factory, which was owned by the UPM Group eren Holding, based in Turkey, will join the group in October 2021. The division dedicated to paper Eren Paper had then announced to invest 630 million euros.

The value of the order is not disclosed, but Valmet says that a project of this size typically requires about ?150-170 million.
