LU's famous "Véritable Petit Beurre" cookie, as well as the "Petit Brun Extra" and "Thé" cookies, have been given new, more environmentally-friendly packaging. In partnership with Mondel?z International, one of the world's leading snacking companies with iconic brands such as Oreo, LU and Milka, Saica, a specialist in outdoor packaging solutions, has developed a single-paper solution, designed to be recycled, and aimed at significantly reducing the use of plastic. Since 2024, products have been arriving on the market with this new packaging, manufactured at Mondelez International's La Haye-Fouassière plant in France.
Innovation for sustainability
Mondel?z and Saica developed this packaging as part of a global sustainability strategy. Thanks to this change, the use of virgin plastic is reduced by 63% per pack, saving 177 tons of plastic in France, Belgium and the UK.
Made from FSC®-certified paper, this packaging is suitable for recycling in the paper industry. It incorporates a cold seal, guaranteeing the preservation of product quality while remaining compatible with existing production lines. Its recyclability has been positively tested according to the CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) version 2 recyclability test method.
Collaboration between Saica and Mondel?z and packaging machine manufacturers
This success is based on close collaboration between Mondel?z, Saica and packaging machine manufacturers, who have adapted the equipment to guarantee performance equivalent to that of older plastic packaging. This means we can maintain the same production rate while minimizing environmental impact.
A project in line with environmental objectives
This innovation is part of Mondel?z's Vision 2030 strategy, which places sustainability at the heart of its operations. In particular, the company is committed to designing 98% of its packaging to be recyclable by 2025, and to reducing the use of virgin plastic by 5%.
