An application, a print and some imagination can create a remarkable marketing coup with a classic cardboard package.

Last March, in the United States, Pizza Hut launched pizza boxes on which it is possible to play Pac-Man in augmented reality (AR).

These traditional cardboard boxes feature a printed Pac-Man game board and QR code. When scanned with a smartphone or tablet, the QR code brings the board to life by allowing you to play the famous 80s/90s video game in augmented reality.

The interlude, created by agencies Tool and GSD & M Pac-Man, is part of the Texas fast-food chain's Newstalgia campaign, which involves bringing out iconic images from the brand's 1958 past (such as arcade games and red cups) but with a contemporary twist.

"The design and creation of Pac-Man was inspired by the shape of a pizza with a slice removed, which makes this partnership so appropriate for the Pac-Man brand." said Yutaka Fuse, head of licensing and branding at Bandai Namco Entertainment, the game's owner. "The Pac-Man and Pizza Hut games hold a special place in many people's memories; we are thrilled to have the opportunity to create fun memories for a new generation of Pac-Man and Pizza Hut fans through this collaboration."
