PostScript fonts: 1984 - 2023

The end of PostScript fonts on January 1st 2023

Adobe announces the imminent end of PostScript font support, forcing professionals to (urgently) update their font files and licenses.

The end of an era

After 40 years of good and loyal services, PostScript fonts will cease to be recognized by Adobe, then probably soon after, by Apple and Microsoft. Commonly interpreted by office software suites and printers, they are now considered obsolete because of their lack of technical possibilities: not supported by web browsers and mobile platforms.

A reality ignored by some companies

Many companies have not yet reacted to this upcoming change, either because they are used to using these policies or because they are simply unaware of it. At January 1, 2023 If you do not have a PostScript font, the PostScript fonts will no longer be recognized and a missing fonts message will appear when the document is opened. To remedy this situation, there are two solutions:

  • conversion, the quality of which is not guaranteed and remains limited under agreement of the foundry owner of the policy;
  • updating the font to an OpenType format and therefore purchasing new licenses.

For a project opening, it is recommended to use only openType fonts to avoid any update problem. The latter offer richer variations and a greater variety of glyphs.

As announced in 2019, the latest version of Adobe Photoshop has already stopped this support. Enough to encourage professionals to take this step with interest.

ePS and PDF files containing PostScript fonts will remain printable, but will no longer be editable.
