HP invests in paper bottles

HP plans to revolutionize the plastics market with fiber-based packaging.

HP has announced the acquisition of Choose Packaging, a packaging development company based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Choose Packaging integrates the U.S. printing press manufacturer's personalization and 3D printing business.

Choose Packaging is the inventor of a paper bottle. Made of a paper envelope lined with a waterproof plant-based PET-free coating, this patented bottle can hold various types of liquids and replace solutions previously made of plastic.

"More than 150 million tons of single-use plastics are produced each year, and HP intends to revolutionize this market with fiber-based, 100% plastic-free packaging." hP said in a statement.

Choose works with many large companies, including Accolade Wines, one of the world's largest wine companies with over 50 brands, including Hardys, Banrock Station and Grant Burge, as well as Henkel, one of the world's largest consumer and industrial goods companies, and Malibu, one of the brands in the Pernod-Ricard portfolio.

This is not HP's first investment in the sustainable fiber-based packaging market. In September 2020, the U.S. manufacturer launched a 3D printing-compatible molded-fiber tooling solution designed to bring customizable fiber-based products to market faster and at lower cost.

"This acquisition is a great example of how we continue to build our capabilities in attractive verticals like sustainable packaging while advancing HP's broader sustainability goals." said Savi Baveja, director of strategy and incubation at HP Inc.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
