This new site will strengthen Mondi's collaboration with its customers to produce ever more sustainable packaging.

Ãeuros just the inauguration of its first recyclability laboratory completed in Austria, Mondi announces another facility to open in late 2023. For an investment of approximately ?5 million, the British packaging manufacturer will establish a research and development (R&D) center for sustainable packaging solutions located in Mondi Steinfeld, Germany.

The facility, which has just begun construction, will house pilot packaging production lines for plastic and paper-based solutions, including extrusion coating, siliconization, printing and filling lines for various types of products. These filling lines will allow customers to conduct trials without interrupting their own production.

This R&D center will also have an analysis laboratory as well as a space dedicated to customer experience. This space will allow working with customers to develop solutions. The group already has six R&D centers, but none was dedicated to sustainable packaging.

Elisabeth Schwaiger, Head of R&D and IP Flexible Packaging at Mondi, states: "This R&D center demonstrates our hands-on approach to developing sustainable packaging solutions at Mondi. We look forward to working with our customers, combining their knowledge with ours to achieve their sustainable packaging goals. The investment also contributes to our own Mondi Action Plan 2030 sustainability goals, in particular our goal of making 100% of our products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025."
