After the launch of the boardmaster rotary press at Interpack 2023 heidelberg is announcing a wider range of applications for this new inline flexographic printing system. In the medium term, this rotary press will also be able to produce flexible paper packaging.
90% availability and a speed of 600 metres per minute
"The growing demand for packaging that is sustainably produced, economical and recyclable or compostable makes flexible paper an attractive growth market for us." says Christian Steinmassl, Packaging Segment Manager at Heidelberg. "Our Boardmaster flexographic web printing system, capable of processing water-based inks, coatings and barrier layers at production speeds of up to 600 meters per minute with up to 90% availability, is ideal for this market."
This availability and speed is double the productivity of comparable previous systems, assures the German group, which adds that maintenance costs are 50% lower than those of systems using other printing processes.
And its Intellimatch printing plate and sleeve scanner, managed by AI which detects anomalies and automatically adjusts the press settings, guarantees, according to its manufacturer, printing results that meet the highest quality standards.
Numerous options are available. In addition to automation and inspection modules, the press, which currently handles substrates from 70 to 800 g/m 2 for example, is available in four print widths ranging from 850 to 1,650 mm.

Several presses are already in operation in the United States, and orders from all over the world are very encouraging (the latest coming from the packaging and container manufacturer
southern Champion Tray, who signed the order form at Drupa).
This machine is also of interest to large-format offset printers producing food and beverage packaging," reveals Christian Steinmassl.
The Boardmaster press is now being demonstrated at Heidelberg's Print Media Center (PMC) in Wiesloch-Walldorf, Germany.
