Banding pallets without plastic? It is possible

Mondi and ACMI's new packaging system offers a more sustainable solution for pallet packaging.

It's a first: a wrapping paper is now available to wrap pallets for transport. Launched by paper manufacturer Mondi, this recyclable solution called Advantage StretchWrap can replace low-recycled multi-layer plastic, which is currently the industry standard for pallet wrapping.

Advantage StretchWrap is a lightweight paper with stretch properties. Mondi has been producing high-stretch papers for innerspring mattress wrapping for 20 years. It took two years of research and development to come up with this new line of lightweight paper that resists punctures. "Advantage StretchWrap is a 100% paper solution, confirms Mondi. Continued development of paper parameters in strength, elongation and reduced grammage have enabled the launch of these new solutions."

"The paper's impressive stretchability and high tensile strength make it a reliable alternative for transportation. Acceleration tests to simulate transportation with ESTL equipment (performed in accordance with EUMOS 40509) and actual transportation tests confirmed that pallets wrapped with Advantage StretchWrap are safe." says Mondi.

The papermaker has partnered with Italian machine manufacturer ACMI to develop a complete paper banding system consisting of Advantage StretchWrap paper and the Rocket E-500 banding machine.

"This is a great example of how we make packaging and paper sustainable by design, using paper where possible, plastic where useful." says Paulus Goess, sales manager for Mondi's specialty kraft papers.
