Saica invests over 100 million euros in the construction of a cardboard mill

The new plant, due to come on stream in 2025, will bring together two sites and should have a 45% higher production capacity.

The foundation stone was laid on Friday 24th November. Spanish packaging manufacturer Saica will operate a new corrugated plant in Barcelona in spring 2025.

The site will bring together the activities of two plants, Saica Pack El Prat and Saica Pack Barcelona, which are currently limited by space and ageing facilities. The project, worth over ?100 million, is expected to increase production at both plants by 45%.

The new building in Barcelona will be equipped with flexographic and offset printing, and "will offer significant advances as a result of digitization at the service of customers" says the group, which generates sales of nearly 4.4 billion euros.

The land for the new plant has been owned by Saica since 2010. In 2018, the group built and began operating a finished goods warehouse on the site.

The current Barcelona and El Prat sites will continue to operate until the new plant opens, to which they will gradually transfer their production.

Employees at the two plants, 194 and 100 respectively, will be offered a transfer to the new site.
