Esko Phoenix: automation and optimization for roll-to-roll production

Esko Phoenix, award-winning pre-production software, is now available for roll-to-roll applications. This AI solution facilitates imposition and nesting in flexo, offset and digital printing, optimizing processes and minimizing manual errors.

Esko introduces Phoenix, an innovative automation application for packaging and label printers, with a focus on continuous-flow production. Following a presentation at drupa 2024, this software, equipped with imposition and nesting functionalities based on artificial intelligence, opens up to roll-to-roll applications. By adding this functionality to their suite, Esko extends its presence in intelligent print planning.

Phoenix automates the planning stages, reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks. For example, the software deploys algorithms to calculate label layouts and optimize reel formats, limiting material waste. This gain in time and precision makes up for human error, while maximizing efficiency.

One of Phoenix's strengths is its ability to nest and impose elements optimally, according to machine and substrate characteristics. This reduces the frequency of reel changes and the number of die-cuts, an asset for printers seeking to cut operating costs. By grouping elements horizontally and vertically on the reel, the software also reduces the need for manual intervention.

Printers can now include specifications such as winding direction, core diameter and number of acceptable splices on the roll. Phoenix also calculates multi-reel compositions and ink requirements, meeting the specific compatibility and accuracy criteria of roll-to-roll. With this increased customization, errors are minimized and final quality is standardized.

Phoenix evaluates the costs of different print configurations in real time and determines the most economical solution, taking into account the number of labels per roll, material thickness and ink consumption. By reducing the need for costly adjustments, this method cuts costs and meets print shops' budget targets.

Phoenix features an intuitive, drag-and-drop interface for fast, customized configuration. With REST API integration, the software easily adapts to existing workflows, an essential feature for large production lines looking to integrate these technologies with other production management software.
