GMI reopens debate on the use of paper in the Paris metro system
The national campaign "Le papier, bien plus à la page qu'il n'y paraît", orchestrated by the Groupement des Métiers de l'Impression (GMI), is taking over 4x4 posters in the metro. This initiative, supported by various players in the graphics sector, aims to boost the image of paper by highlighting its environmental benefits and economic impact. Schur Pack Germany installs two Rapida 145 presses from Koenig & Bauer, boosting automation and sustainability
Schur Pack Germany has ordered two Rapida 145 large-format offset presses from Koenig & Bauer, each equipped with six printing units and finishing devices. Scheduled to come on stream in 2025, this installation is aimed at energy savings and improved efficiency. The presses incorporate innovations such as energy-saving VariDry+ dryers, VisuEnergy X monitoring systems and automated waste management. Double-stack production also enables automatic separation of defective sheets, optimizing the efficiency and sustainability of printing processes for the Gallin site.
Transcontinental sells its industrial packaging division
Transcontinental announces the sale of its industrial packaging division to Hood Packaging Corporation for $132 million, transferring its North Carolina operations and building as well as part of its California site. A total of 138 employees will be transferred. With this sale, Transcontinental, Canada's leading printer and North America's fourth largest flexible packaging printer, aims to reduce its debt and strengthen its financing capacity for acquisitions in strategic segments. The industrial packaging division, with year-on-year sales of $68 million, offered few synergies with the rest of its activities, which were refocused on growth in its packaging sector.
Slight upturn in business climate in the German printing industry in October 2024
After a marked decline in September, the business climate in the German printing and media industry rebounded slightly in October, with a 0.5% rise in the index calculated by the Federal Printing and Media Association. The index reached 89.8 points, 2.2% above its October 2023 level. While companies' assessment of the current situation is improving, the outlook for the next six months remains uncertain, with business expectations continuing to decline.

RFID chips also improve logistics, security and product communication, ensuring optimum traceability. Saica Group strengthens its presence in Poland with the acquisition of Schumacher Packaging
Saica Group announces the acquisition of Schumacher Packaging's plants in Poland, completed on October 31, 2024. The acquisition includes two corrugated board plants in Bydgoszcz and Wroc?aw, two paper mills in Grudzi?dz and Myszków, and three service centers. Approved by the Polish competition authorities, the transaction adds 420,000 tons to Saica's recycled corrugated base paper production capacity and 530 million square meters for corrugated board. This acquisition enables the Saica Group to expand its capacities in Central and Eastern Europe, while strengthening its offering of sustainable solutions based on the circular economy. With more than 10,300 employees and an international presence, Saica continues to expand in waste management and corrugated board production solutions.
Anger and concern of Lecas paper mill employees faced with planned closure
Nearly fifty employees of the Lecas paper mill in Nersac gathered on Thursday October 31, 2024 to voice their opposition to the gradual closure of their plant, announced at the end of September. Lecas, a subsidiary of the Hamelin group, is relocating its diary production to Turkey. The situation of the employees is critical: despite negotiations underway since the beginning of October, uncertainty about their future persists. The Hamelin group, which imposes a high rent on its subsidiary, has reportedly threatened to close the plant in the event of disagreement over the social plan, thereby threatening 69 jobs.
