The Italian digital printing specialist relies on the interoperability of prepress workflows with the German publisher of PDF solutions.

Italian digital printing machine manufacturer Durst has acquired German company Callas Software, renowned for its prepress automation tools and PDF technologies widely integrated in graphic production lines. This operation is part of the group's strategy to develop an open software platform for other manufacturers and publishers in the printing sector.

Callas Software, founded in 1995, develops the PDF engines used in the pdfToolbox and pdfaPilot solutions, which are also embedded as OEM components in third-party solutions such as Adobe Acrobat or the production workflows of numerous suppliers. Its expertise lies at the heart of quality control, PDF/X and PDF/A standardization, and print automation processes.

"With Callas at our side, we're making printing software smarter, more connected and more powerful "says Christoph Gamper, CEO and co-owner of the Durst Group.

Enhanced software positioning for Durst

Durst Group, whose business has historically been structured around the production of industrial digital printing systems for the label, textile, large-format and packaging segments, is strengthening its software strategy.

For several years now, the Italian company, which employs around 900 people worldwide and has sales of 300 million euros, has been investing in digital tools designed to connect presses, production workflows and management tools, with an emphasis on data fluidity, automation and analytics. This focus had already been demonstrated by the development of the Durst Workflow software platform and modules integrated with its printing solutions.

Callas Software maintains its independence

Callas Software will retain its operational and strategic autonomy. For Callas' OEM customers and technology partners, this acquisition is reassuring: it guarantees continuity in developments, while bringing increased resources thanks to the Durst Group's resources. The press release also refers to new integration prospects in the coming months, notably with the Italian group's software.
