A Siegwerk patent for a primer that facilitates deinking of plastics
Siegwerk has been granted a European patent for a primer technology designed to facilitate deinking during the recycling of printed plastic packaging. Patent EP4107326 covers both solvent-based and water-based formulations.
The primer is applied between the plastic substrate and the ink layer. During the alkaline washing process carried out as part of the recycling process, it helps detach the print before the polymer is reprocessed. The technology can also be used on more complex flexible packaging structures, as well as on labels and shrink sleeves.
According to Siegwerk, removing ink can improve the quality of recycled materials by reducing, in particular, discoloration, odors, and contamination.

Fujifilm Launches an Inkjet Bar for Construction Materials
Fujifilm is expanding its industrial printing applications with the HX1024 Printbar System, a new inkjet printbar designed for integration into building materials production lines.
Capable of reaching 152.4 meters per minute, the HX1024 Printbar System prints in four-color process using UV-LED inks in a single pass at a resolution of 400 DPI. Available in two print widths?762 and 1,016 mm?this system can be used, among other things, to decorate construction films, drywall, laminates, and abrasives. It also allows regulatory information and traceability data to be printed directly onto the materials.
Target of 10 billion euros in purchases of bio-based materials by 2030
On October 21 in Dublin, the European Commission (EC) launched the Bio-based Europe Alliance (BEA), an initiative designed to stimulate demand for bio-based materials. Already bringing together more than 100 companies and organizations, this voluntary alliance aims to facilitate the signing of purchase contracts totaling 10 billion euros by 2030.
The BEA connects European producers, suppliers, and buyers to facilitate the industrial development of alternatives to fossil-based materials. Several markets are involved, including plastics and polymers, textile fibers, chemicals, and construction materials. A key objective is to provide manufacturers with greater visibility into their future market opportunities in order to facilitate their investments in new production capacity.
Herma has had seven cold-peelable label materials for PP packaging certified
The German manufacturer Herma has received certification from the independent institute cyclos-HTP for seven self-adhesive materials capable of completely peeling off rigid polypropylene (PP) packaging during a cold wash at 40 °C. This certification covers six PP films and one polyethylene (PE) film, used in combination with the 72Hpw and 62Xpc adhesives developed by Herma.
The benefit of this technology lies in separating labels from their printing inks before packaging is recycled, in order to minimize contamination of the recycled material. This process is particularly complex for PP, as the label films and packaging have very similar densities. The tests were conducted in accordance with the CHI Recyclability Standard, taking into account the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
