New Year often rhymes with increased paper prices. And 2021 is no exception. Two paper producers have already announced price increases on their European markets.
The Navigator Company raises its paper prices from February 1, 2021, by between 4% and 6% and sets a minimum increase of 30 euros net per ton. The Portuguese group will soon specify the new prices for the different types of paper.
"This decision was taken in light of unsustainably low levels of profitability across the industry in Europe and following recent announcements of worldwide increases in pulp and logistics costs." justifies the paper producer.
As for Sappi, the South African group has been applying a 5 to 8% increase on its fine papers since 1 January. And the papermaker has just announced a further increase.
By March 1, 2021 at the latest, its prices for coated and uncoated woodfree papers will jump by 8-10% on all European markets. This increase concerns both sheet and reel paper.
The papermaker cites a decrease in consumption caused by the covid-19 pandemic and an increase in paper production and transportation costs.
