Several industry players are announcing price adjustments. A questionable trend at a time when some of them are posting solid financial results.

The paper industry continues to face rising production costs, impacting the selling prices of coated, uncoated and packaging papers. SCA was the first to announce a price increase, quickly followed by Felix Schoeller, Sappi Europe and The Navigator Company, who are also applying adjustments from April 2025.

SCA leads the way with an increase of 90 euros per tonne

Earlier this year, SCA Containerboard announced an increase of 90 euros per tonne for its brown and white kraftliners from March 1, 2025. "Demand for kraftliner remains strong in the market, and persistent cost pressure must be taken into account to ensure a sustainable supply." said Mikael Frölander, Vice President Marketing and Sales at SCA.

Felix Schoeller follows up with his awards for decorative paper

German specialty paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller will apply a price increase of up to 10% on its decor paper products from April 1, 2025. This increase "guarantees stability and reliability for all" says the papermaker.

Sappi Europe increases by 8%

As a result, Sappi plans to increase the price of its coated and uncoated fine papers in Europe by 8% from April 7, 2025 those of its specialty products 8% on deliveries from April 15. The Swedish company, which employs over 11,000 people, justifies this decision by the rising cost of raw materials, in particular pulp.

And The Navigator Company too, despite its 2nd best result ever

As for The Navigator Company, the Portuguese papermaker will apply a 4-7% increase to its packaging paper portfolio from April 1, 2025. The Portugal-based papermaker, a subsidiary of the Semapa Group, highlights the impact of higher pulp and energy prices on its production costs. This increase particularly concerns kraft paper for flexible packaging, bags and packaging solutions.

This announcement, which is causing some to cringe, comes at a time when The Navigator Company is reporting solid results for 2024, with sales of 2.09 billion euros (+7%) and EBITDA of 547 million euros (26.2% margin), its second-best year ever. The new tissue and packaging business already accounts for 26% of sales.
