saica invests 100 million euros in new Spanish plant

The new site will gradually take over the corrugated board production previously handled by two other plants.

Spanish paper and packaging manufacturer Saica has announced the construction of a new plant, representing an investment of over 100 million euros, at Sant Esteve Sesrovires in the province of Barcelona, Spain. According to Miguel Arévalo, project manager and general manager of Saica Pack El Prat, the new plant will be a major step forward in Saica's development, "due to its size and technology, a national and European benchmark in the sustainable packaging sector" .

Located on land the Group has owned since 2010, the new plant will have its cornerstone laid this summer, "will feature the latest technology combining flexo and offset printing.

The Saica Pack El Prat and Saica Pack Barcelona plants, also located on the outskirts of Barcelona, have outgrown their existing facilities, and should see their corrugated board production gradually transferred to the new site from the end of 2024, when the first machines are due to be installed.

The El Prat and Barcelona sites have 194 and 100 employees respectively, who will be offered a transfer to Sant Esteve Sesrovires. "We are working on the new organization and hope to have opportunities for all the people on the current staff." says Miguel Arévalo.

The Saica Group, present in 10 countries, achieved sales of 4,394 million euros in 2022. Its annual production capacity in Europe for recycled paper for corrugated board is 3.3 million tonnes.
