Paragon ID optimizes production with Fujifilm LED technologies

Paragon ID UK sees 80% reduction in energy consumption after switching to Fujifilm's LuXtreme LED UV curing system

Just a few months after installing Fujifilm's LuXtreme UV LED curing system and adopting CuremaX UV LED inks, Paragon ID UK is reaping significant benefits in terms of sustainability and operational efficiency. These rapid results follow Paragon ID UK's strategic decision to optimize production operations at its Hull site by adopting Fujifilm's UV LED technologies.

The transition began in 2023, when Paragon ID UK, a leading player in identification solutions including flexographic label printing, RFID tags and access cards, decided to align its production with its internal sustainability goals. It all began with the adoption of Fujifilm's Flenex water wash plates, and soon led to a global collaboration involving the installation of Fujifilm's LuXtreme LED UV curing systems.

By early 2024, Paragon ID had completed the installation of the new systems, and the results since then have been remarkable. Jamie Parker, Operations Manager at Paragon ID's Hull site, has seen impressive energy savings: "Very soon after installing Fujifilm's LuXtreme LED systems, we have already seen a significant drop in our energy consumption. We have compared the performance of the LED systems with that of our previous mercury arc UV systems and IR curing modules, and the results are spectacular: an 80% reduction in energy consumption compared with conventional UV systems, and a 40% saving compared with IR modules. By leveraging Fujifilm's expertise and technologies, we are now able to offer excellent added value to our customers while maximizing our environmental performance. These investments have enabled us to reduce our energy consumption, save time and lower our costs, while achieving unrivalled performance and productivity."

The switch to LED technology has not only reduced energy costs, but also improved working conditions on the production floor. Lee Murrell, Plant Manager at Paragon ID in Hull, described the positive impact of the new systems on staff: "Our press operators have been quick to point out the improvements. The machines are now cooler and quieter, making for a more comfortable and healthier working environment. The absence of ozone, which was a problem with the old UV systems, has also helped improve air quality. In addition, maintenance is easier, with far fewer problems and unplanned downtime caused by UV systems."

The efficiency gains have exceeded all their expectations, leading Paragon ID to consider further upgrades. Jamie Parker concludes: "The performance and energy savings of Fujifilm's LED systems have been so spectacular that we are already considering converting other machines from UV to LED technology. The return on investment has been even faster than we anticipated, and we look forward to continuing this journey towards more sustainable and efficient production."

Ian Isherwood, EMEA Segment Manager - Analog Packaging, Fujifilm Europe, comments, "We are delighted that our partnership with Paragon ID UK has delivered quantifiable results, positioning the company at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the printing industry, to set a new benchmark for efficiency in flexographic label printing. By combining Paragon ID's industry expertise with Fujifilm's advanced solutions, we are confident in our ability to deliver complete, sustainable printing solutions to our customers worldwide."
