UPMâeurosSappi joint venture enters Phase II
The proposed joint venture in graphic papers between UPM and Sappi has reached a new stage in its regulatory review.
On April 28, 2026, the European Commission announced the opening of an in-depth merger control investigation (Phase II). This decision comes after a first phase of investigation, during which certain concerns were not fully resolved.
Visit project, announced in December 2025 via a non-binding letter of intent, remains subject to the approval of competition authorities, notably in the European Union, the United States and China. UPM is continuing its discussions with the European Commission as part of this second phase of analysis.
Censored catalogs: the downside of printing in China for the V&A
London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) has removed cards and images from several exhibition catalogs printed in China, after its printer, C&C Offset Printing, reported that images had been rejected by China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP).
According to documents obtained by Guardian a historic map of the British Empire's trade routes from the 1930s has been removed from the Music Is Black exhibition catalog.
Like other British institutions, the V&A uses Chinese printers, mainly for cost reasons. However, this choice implies that the works are subject to the editorial controls imposed by the local authorities before printing.
Arctic Paper Grycksbo invests 24 million euros
On April 17, 2026, the Arctic Paper Grycksbo paper mill in Sweden inaugurated the Bio25 worksite, an investment of around ?24.5 million to modernize the site's energy system.
The Bio25 project involves extending and modernizing the existing biofuel boiler, and commissioning a new pellet production line. This will produce around 50,000 tonnes of wood pellets a year from residual biomass.
Bio25 also increases the site's flexibility in the choice of biofuels, notably through the possible use of sawdust from external sawmills, and incorporates optimization of fuel logistics. Excess heat from paper production is used for biofuel drying.

Indonesia: a forest razed in the supply chain of a "carbon-neutral" packaging manufacturer
An investigation by AFP and The Gecko Project calls into question the supply chain of Asia Symbol, a Chinese pulp and paper manufacturer whose products include packaging claimed to be "carbon neutral".
According to the investigation, between 2016 and 2024, almost 30,000 hectares of tropical forest were deforested in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, for plantations supplying an Indonesian mill (Phoenix Resources International), which supplies Asia Symbol with paper pulp.
Satellite data, audit documents and vessel tracking enable us to trace pulp flows to the Chinese ports of Rugao and Rizhao, where Asia Symbol operates industrial facilities.
Asia Symbol claims to adhere to a no-deforestation policy and has launched a targeted review of its sourcing. The Haleon Group, one of the manufacturer's customers, announced that it was severing its commercial ties in the wake of these revelations.
