Figures published by Idep in its annual report on the overall evolution of the printing sector in France.

Last November, the Institute for Development and Expertise in Multimedia (Idep) delivered its Annual Report on Graphic Communication Markets. This publication, which takes stock of the overall development of the printing sector in France, is based on figures and data for the year 2018.

Company size

The Idep indicates that the structure of the commercial printing sector is similar to that of previous years, with three-quarters of establishments having fewer than 11 employees. The industrial fabric of the graphic industries remains highly fragmented despite the business groupings that are taking place. Nearly 60% of employees work in companies with fewer than 50 employees.

This fragmentation weakens companies, particularly in their investment capacity, but makes them more flexible from an organisational point of view, notes the Institute.

How many commercial printers are there in France??

In 2018, the branch will have 2,945 installed commercial printing plants in France, compared with 3?044 in 2017 (-3.3%) and 3,154 in 2016. The number of employees decreased by 4.1% to 37?984 employees.

"?Les companies with 50-99 employees are proportionally the ones with the most souffert?" says the Idep. Île-de-France has lost 50 establishments, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region has lost 15 establishments, and the Grand Est has lost 14 establishments.

As regards the decline in the number of employees, the Île-de-France, Normandy and South-East regions were proportionally the most affected. In ten years, the Idep points out, commercial printing has lost nearly 40% of its employees.
