FP Mercure packaging printer switches to digital finishing

"It's a first in France for packaging" according to the printer.

"We have been in production since the end of August" says Frédéric Corbo, co-manager of FP Mercure located in Saint-Marcellin in Isère. The 19-person printing company installed this summer a digital finishing press MGI JETvarnish 3D iFoil and a laser cutting machine Sei Laser, in its workshop where a HP Indigo press has been enthroned since 2017.

FP Mercure, a 100% digital printing company

"FP Mercure is a pure digital player. We had agility for several years in printing thanks to our HP Indigo 30 000, but then we fell back into the usual problems and constraints of any cardboard manufacturer during finishing explains Frédéric Corbo who runs the company with his brother Philippe Corbo. We were therefore looking to push digital consistency from one end of the chain to the other. The technologies are now mature, which allows us to switch to digital technologies for finishing and cutting. This is a first in France for packaging."

The company manager presents himself as a digital printer and not as a digital printer. "In my opinion, digital printing corresponds to copiers, inkjet, toner while with digital we are on offset quality levels" he explains.

A JETvarnish 3D iFoil from MGI for premium packaging

MGI's JETvarnish 3D iFoil finishing press applies selective varnish, flat varnish, 2D varnish, 3D varnish and hot foil stamping, services that the printer did not offer until now.

With this MGI, JFP Mercure regularly realizes gold hot stamping or matte lamination with glossy selective varnish. But the possibilities of finishing are immense and the printer also applies sometimes several finishes as a hot stamping with a selective varnish in relief.

"Our customers are thrilled! They now go the extra mile to finish their packs, giving them a premium look."

Variable data cutting and digital grooving with the Sei Laser

The Sei Laser Paper One 5000 V800 Dual laser cutting machine completes the traditional cutting equipment of the workshop which counts 2000 forms. "Laser cutting enables variable data cutting, tool-less microseries and reduced set-up and cutting time performance."

This Laser Paper One 5000 V800 Dual is equipped with an automatic paper transport system, from pallet to pallet. It allows to make in-line creasing: "The laser cutting is combined with a 3D printing system that reproduces the groovers part male part female by depositing on a cylindrical shape the grooving threads. It completely revolutionizes the quality of creasing."

"We offer small series, from pre-series of five to a few hundred pieces. Now, the most inventive embellishments are democratized and no longer the prerogative of a few luxury brands."
