SolidTune, Agfa's solution for reduced ink requirements and improved print quality

This print optimization solution is designed for offset printing of packaging.

Agfa launches SolidTune, a prepress software solution that reduces ink consumption in offset packaging printing. SolidTune, part of Agfa's ECO3 range, applies an algorithm to solids and text in the last step of the rendering process, after screening and before platemaking. This process reduces the amount of ink needed by an average of 3 percent, while ensuring high print quality.

Unlike other solutions, Agfa's software is designed with unique edge protection, according to its manufacturer. " In other words, the edges of the solids are preserved, resulting in a clean, crisp print. This feature creates a better 1-bit printable file for offset packaging printing, in which spot colors are often printed in solids."

In addition, this reduced ink consumption reduces production times, as the ink film dries faster and with less energy expenditure. This allows the printer to move on to finishing faster.

Other consequences of this ink saving are improved ink distribution, reduced problems associated with ink smearing from one print to the next, and less force on the substrate to prevent fiber tearing.

"Very user-friendly and simple to use during the rendering process, this smart tool generates some pretty significant improvements in print quality." says Andy Grant, Agfa's global head of software.

SolidTune is compatible with all types of screening, but for best results, Agfa recommends it with Spir@l, its patented screening technology which has been extended in 2021 to packaging printing.

SolidTune is offered in the Agfa Apogee and Amfortis prepress workflows.
