New-generation Speedmaster XL 106: towards more economical printing

Productivity improved by 20%, operator comfort, energy savings... Heidelberg unveils the major new features of the new Speedmaster XL 106 offset press, which will be previewed at Drupa.

At Drupa 2024, Heidelberg will present its latest generation of offset presses, the new Speedmaster XL 106. Featuring a host of new functionalities, this new generation is designed to be faster and more automated, in order to reduce "significantly reduce printing production costs" explains Ludwin Monz, CEO of the German group.

20% more productivity on packaging and labels

Thanks to an enhanced Push to Stop automation system that configures complex production parameters, this new generation of offset presses is now autonomous in packaging and label production.

"We expect a high-volume packaging producer or wet-glue label manufacturer to pass the 100-million-sheets-per-year mark very soon. This figure represents a 20% increase on the 85 million sheets currently produced by today's industry leaders." says Markus Leichtle, Senior Director of Industrial Packaging at Heidelberg.

More comfort and less anti-maculage powder

With new improvements to the user experience (UX) and a new ergonomic design, the new Speedmaster XL 106 requires fewer staff and an improved working environment.

Heidelberg also offers a new anti-maculation powder, PowderStar XL (Duo), which reduces powder consumption by up to 15% and powder emissions by up to 45%.

30% energy savings on drying

The German manufacturer has also focused on energy savings. The new DryStar Combine Eco dryer uses up to 30% less energy, thanks to insulation at the infeed, a flow heat exchanger and improved dryer cassette design.

What's more, the complete press consumes less energy per 1,000 sheets when production speed is increased: for example, when print speed is increased from 18,000 to 21,000 sheets per hour, energy consumption drops by around 4.5%.

A workflow that reduces preparation time and waste

The Prinect workflow features new or enhanced functions, such as Intellistart 3, which reduces job changeover times by around 70%, or the improved Color Assistant Pro support system, which automatically presets ink.
These functions save up to four minutes of set-up time and between 100 and 150 sheets of waste paper.

Heidelberg will unveil further details of this new generation Speedmaster XL 106 at Drupa 2024, which opens in Düsseldorf, Germany, on May 28.
