Faced with the challenges of industrial agility in the label and packaging sector, the retrofit solutions offered by AB Graphic International (ABG) seem to be meeting converters' expectations. The UK-based manufacturer has just announced that it completed over 170 retrofit installations in 2024, an increase of 239% on the previous year. This dynamic performance is largely due to the modular design of ABG equipment, which facilitates its evolution over time.
Adapting lines to new needs without changing everything
Well-known for its finishing solutions for self-adhesive labels, ABG has been emphasizing the modularity of its lines for several years now. Customers can thus enhance their initial configuration with new physical or software modules, as their business evolves.
Among the most popular retrofits is the flat foil stamping module, available in 25 or 50-ton (Big Foot) versions. Suitable for both embossing and hot foil stamping, it produces premium effects on labels.
The high-speed screen-printing module, which extends the range of varnish effects with matte, gloss or tactile finishes, is also a highly installed option.
Another example of the upgrades required is the lamination system with register. It enables the assembly of several printed layers, particularly when manufacturing multi-page "peel and reveal" labels. This type of product is increasingly used in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food sectors, which require additional information on the packaging.
The retrofit also applies to software, with the installation of ABG Connect, which automates the setting and automatic changing of jobs.
A sustainable alternative to new-build investment
The sharp rise in retrofits in 2024 suggests a possible evolution in industry practices, where optimization of existing equipment could take on increasing importance in the face of complete machine renewal.
