Hardware / Durst unveils the P5 SMP, a led inkjet press for hybrid printing

Designed for signage, POP or corrugated board, the P5 SMP hybrid led printer is a 3.5 m multi-pass inkjet solution, with particularly high productivity reaching 1âeuros940Â m2/hr.

At a major event on November 6 at its Lienz site in Austria, Durst officially launched its new "Super Multi-Pass" digital led inkjet press, the P5 SMP. An evolution of the P5 platform, this 3.5-meter-wide hybrid machine combines web and flatbed printing, with a production capacity announced at five million square meters per year.

Multiple media, two resolutions and up to 10 ink channels

Durst's P5 SMP printer is designed for several large-format segments: display, POP, corrugated packaging and industrial decoration. It accepts media up to 70 mm thick, in rolls or sheets. Two formats can be processed simultaneously, and later up to four formats in parallel.

Two resolutions are available: 700 × 1200 DPI and 900 × 1200 DPI. LED drying consumes 35 kWh of electricity.

The system can manage up to ten color channels, depending on the application (white, orange, violet or clear inks, depending on the application)

Among on-board technologies, the Digital Substrate Alignment (DSA) system provides digital registration with a claimed accuracy of ±0.25 mm. This function is particularly useful for double-sided printing and die-cutting.
Durst also offers an automated holding device for corrugated board, to prevent edge distortion and collisions during printing.

High productivity with a small footprint

The P5 SMP can achieve particularly high productivity, reaching 1âeuros940Â m 2 /h or 340 plates/hour (3.2 × 1.6 m). Even in the fully automated version, its footprint is less than 160 m 2 .

Numerous automation options, such as feeding or stacking units, are also available and will enable unattended operation throughout the entire working time, stresses Andrea Riccardi, Product Management Director Graphics & Textile at Durst.

The system is supplied with Durst Workflow and Durst Analytics software solutions, which centralize production data and online monitoring tools. For Andrea Riccardi, Graphics and Textiles Product Manager, full automation is the prerequisite for exploiting the system's full potential.

Feedback from the P5 SMP pilot plant

Already presented at Drupa 2024, the P5 SMP was tested under industrial conditions at Arian, an Austrian service provider specializing in point-of-sale (POS) campaigns. According to Group CEO Christoph Gamper, this test phase enabled the Italian manufacturer to fine-tune its functionalities before going to market.

Robert Posch, Production Manager at Arian, said at the launch of this printing machine that it had considerably reduced processing times: "We tested over 200 materials in different formats on the P5 SMP. The times
short setup times and a high level of automation help us to manage this
variety of substrates. With the P5 SMP, we have also increased our capacity for
production and can respond much more quickly to customer demands âeuros a
essential success factor in today's market."
