Canon unveils its future high-volume digital printing press, the varioPrint iX1700, designed to meet the demand for shorter runs and tighter deadlines. The result of joint development by R&D facilities in Japan, Germany and the Netherlands, this B3-format sheet-fed press features new high-definition printheads and operates with new inks.
The printheads offer a resolution of 2400 x 1200 DPI and are equipped with an ink circulation system to the nozzles, ensuring colorimetric stability.
The new inks have been specifically formulated by Canon for these heads. Containing "high-density pigments", water-based polymer inks produce "a wider color gamut" says Canon. The ink, which is sprayed onto the substrate after the conditioning liquid, fixes the pigments to the substrate in a single stroke "very thin layer", enabling "excellent color reproduction" and the preservation of "the natural texture of the substrate".

The other new feature of this inkjet printer is its design. For ease of use, operators have access to the front of the varioPrint iX1700, with a window for observing the printing process.
At 170 A4 pages per minute (or 73 B3 pages per minute), this new press sits between the Canon imagePress V1350 digital toner press (135 ppm) and the Canon varioPrint iX2100/3200 inkjet press (210 and 320 ppm).
This sheetfed inkjet machine will be presented to the public for the first time at Canon Expo, to be held in Yokohama, Japan, on October 19 and 20. In Europe, the varioPrint iX1700 will be unveiled at Drupa, from May 28 to June 7, 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The varioPrint iX1700 press will be available in Europe in 2025.
