The Canon Group, champion of the number of patents held

For 35 years, without interruption, the Japanese manufacturer has been among the top 5 patent holders in the United States.

According to data from IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, Canon is the third largest patent filer in the US in 2020, with 3?226 patents. The manufacturer specialising in digital image and document technologies thus becomes the only company in the world to appear in the top 5 for 35 consecutive years. The group also retains first place among Japanese companies in the same ranking.

The group, which employs more than 187?000 people around the world, pursues a policy of acquiring and using intellectual property rights to design innovative products, but also "for the wireless and image-compression modes of communication necessary for new habits of social exchange" he points out.

Founded in 1937, Canon's products include digital presses, large-format printing machines, printers, projectors, scanners, X-ray machines, cameras and software solutions for communication, information and print management, and business process management.

In May 2020, Canon signed the Covid-19 Countermeasure Declaration. According to this declaration, Canon commits to refrain from enforcing its intellectual property rights in any development, manufacturing and other activities carried out to combat the covid-19 pandemic.
